I know where your comming from. My dad was the same way, I was 16 when he put me to work on the job. Making repairs in the building was okay and I was good at it. Mostly though it was mopping and sweeping and hauling heavy things. If i was tired or something my dad would tell me take a day but then id hear about it for a week.
I think (not that you asked but anyway) you should follow your dreams. Some of the things you have written and I have read are amazing. You clearly have the creative stuff running in you. Besides you dont fit the steriotypical "engineer" profile :)
