Ewwww, beach scum
Mar. 16th, 2005 04:03 pmJean and I went to the beach yesterday. It so, so rocked. The place we went to is a couple of hours from Olympia, and it's a really nice drive through Aberdeen and up the coast. We got to the beach at ten or so- the mist hadn't burned off completely yet, and these sweeping cliffs disappeared into it up and down the coast. The ocean is spectacular.
We drove right onto the beach and walked down to the waterline. The tide was out so it was hella far away; and the closer you got to the water, the beach-scummier it got. Beach scum is this brown goo that the thin tidal waves wash in. The waves chased us back up the beach a couple of times, so after a while we stopped trying to get too far out and tried to dig up a clam.
It didn't work. Stupid clams. It was in there, but we just couldn't dig down deep enough.
The rest of the morning was spent looking for and collecting pretty shells and driftwood and meandering all over the beach. There were all these empty crab shells all over the place- they were really creepy looking and made a sound like potato chips when you stepped on them.
After a while, these islands appeared off shore that hadn't been visible before. We decided to go investigate and forded a pretty deep creek in Jean's Ford to get closer.
While we were on that side of the beach, we wrote stupid things in the sand and took picutres of it.

Because I am a giant, giant geek. Yep. I think I also wrote out "Grissom" in the sand and took a picture to drive my mother nuts.
Then we drove back and re-forded the creek, stopping near this gigantic piece of driftwood treeroot. We got out the picnic that we'd brought with us and climbed up on top to eat it. It was very froo-froo- bread and cheese and fruit with Merlot jelly. Merlot jelly is something, let me tell you.
After we left the beach, we went back to Olympia and walked around the Capitol for a couple of hours. The cherry trees are all blooming here, and it was wonderful to just walk around in the late afternoon and admire them :) Olympia is really a beautiful city. It doesn't have the same shit feel to it that Albany has to NYC, and breaks the "state capitols are always holes" thing right to bits.

DUDE. I SAW A WHOLE BUNCH OF STRIKER TANKS TODAY AND IT WAS FUCKING COOL.
I went to Fort Lewis with Jeannette today, and she showed me the whole thing. The office buildings, the General's building, all the nice barracks and all the shitty barracks. The whole base is a little city unto itself, and it is HUGE. It's one of the biggest bases in the whole country. We drove by the airfield, and I saw Blackhawks and some other kind of helicopter whose speed is classified. After Jeannette showed me all over, she took me to this place called Solo Point (that's still part of the base) and we picked up mussel shells that had been washed up on the beach. It looks over the southern end of Puget Sound, and it was very peaceful in the light mist thing that was going on. Of course, that only lasted until the artillery fire started up, but since you drive to it through an impact zone, I guess it's only to be expected.
We wound up going to breakfast with Jean's friend Jerry, and he's really cool. I just sat back and listened to them tell war stories about Iraq and Korea.
After we left the base, we drove over to Steilacoom for milkshakes. What a cute, cute little town. No one really knows it's there, and it's quaint without being hokey. And the views of the Sound were awesome :)
And I guess I'm all babbled out and caught up now.
But babbled out and caught up with lots of pretty seashells!!!! *squees*
