Late afternoon; fluffy clouds just peeking through the lace curtains in my kitchen window, golden sunlight streaking across the warped wooden floor.

He looked surprised to be there.

Not that I could blame him. The first time in my world is always a scary thing. After all, we live in a scary society that’s hell bent on self destruction- throw yourself in with me, and you’re bound to be startled. But I digress.

“Who are you?” he asked, his eyes narrowed.

That’s always the first question they ask, I thought as I put my ham sandwich down on the table, setting a glass of coke beside it. I couldn’t help sighing. The damn sandwich looked good, and now it was destined for someone else’s stomach.

“Sit,” I replied, gesturing to a chair at the table. He sat, eyeing the sandwich warily, as if it somehow was an agent of doom.

I explained things to him as I made another sandwich. I don’t think he was paying much attention; having discovered that the food in front of him was not, in fact, a threat, he focused on devouring it as quickly as possible.

“You listening, Anakin?”

Vague nods and chewing noises came from his direction. Damn, he looked cute in his little Jedi outfit. I decided to give him a special welcoming treat.

A minute later he was staring down at a bowl filled with a gloppy brown substance. He stared at it, cautiously tasting a tiny bit on the end of his spoon before gobbling the rest down.

The cool May breeze fluttered my hair around my face, and Anakin pushed it tenderly away.

“I think I’m in love with you,” he said, his eyes filled with adoration.

“Shut up and eat your ice cream."
